Andreas Markus Auf der Maur was born in Lucerne, Switzerland, where he grew up, later attending the Arts University. For a time he worked as a freelance art director for various advertising agencies in Switzerland & Germany, handling a number of national and international accounts.

More recently he has focused on his work as a freelance artist, with emphasis on filigree ink drawings and shortcut movies. It was during these years that he developed a fondness for photography, creating portraits of actors, musicians and friends.

Faces have always played a key role in Andreas Auf der Maur’s distinctive visual vocabulary, so it was but a short step from sketching studies of faces to capturing their instant images by photographic means.

His photographs are classic image compositions, portrait-like and mostly monochrome, and never loud nor lurid. He seeks always a sensitive approach to the person portrayed, one that affords a glimpse of their soul while mindful always never to expose it.

His creative output is further complemented by factual interiors- & stilllife photographs and a  new focus on travelphotography.
